The Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies (PIMS) recognized Fr. Donald Finlay’s, CSB years of service to the Institute as its librarian by naming the reference room in his honour. A reception was held in the newly named Donald F. Finlay Reference Room in the John Kelly Library in Toronto, Ontario on Monday, June 5; the celebration coincided with Fr. Finlay’s 81st birthday. In attendance were members of the PIMS board of governors; faculty and staff of PIMS and the University of St. Michael’s College; Fr. Finlay’s brother, John Finlay, with his family; and members of the Congregation of St. Basil.
Richard Alway, president of PIMS, thanked Fr. Finlay for his dedicated work in helping to build up the library’s collection, which he described as the “jewel of the Institute.” Fr. Finlay served as the Institute’s librarian from 1966-1992 during which he accompanied many scholars and students on their faith journeys. In his address, Fr. George Smith, CSB, superior general, described how Fr. Finlay used culture as a medium of pastoral ministry.
