Basilian Project Provides Afterschool Care and Academic Support to Children in Mexico

November 10, 2022

Basilian scholastic, Lauro Sánchez Sánchez, CSB, has undertaken a project to provide children with afterschool care and academic support. The project helps some of the youngest and most vulnerable members of the parish chapel in the Vistahermosa neighbourhood in Tehuacán, Mexico. When the children finish their school day at 1 p.m. they are supervised by volunteers until their parents finish work around 5 p.m. The children are also provided with a meal and homework help during this time.

Lauro Sánchez Sánchez, CSB began the project when he was a Basilian novice. Currently, he is a scholastic and has finished his theology degree and working towards his doctorate in education as he prepares to take his final vows to become a priest.

This project has been aided by a generous donation from the nephew of Father Owen Lee, CSB. Two years ago, Owen and his wife Heather Lee wanted to make a donation to a Basilian project in honour of their upcoming 25th wedding anniversary. After some consultation, this project was determined to be a good fit. The money went towards construction of two classrooms. One of the classrooms will be named after Father Lee, CSB and another after Father Richard Elmer, CSB. Construction is underway on more rooms that will be used for workshops and psychological, emotional, and spiritual support for students and their families in this underserved neighborhood of Tehuacán.

There will be a campaign at Detroit Catholic Central to raise additional funds for this Basilian educational project.
