Basilian Fathers to Celebrate the Ordination of Steven Gerard Huber, CSB
January 30, 2019
On February 9, 2019, the Congregation of St. Basil celebrates the ordination of Steven Huber, CSB. Most Reverend Ricardo Ramirez, CSB, Bishop of Las Cruces, will preside at the Mass of Ordination, held at Our Lady of the Annunciation Catholic Church, in Albuquerque, NM at 10:00 a.m MST.
When asked what is going through his heart and mind right now as he looks forward to the big moment Huber replied:
“There is a lot of excitement, especially as plans and details fall into place. I think the biggest challenge for me is to see Ordination not as the end of studies and formation, but as the beginning of a lifelong commitment to serve Christ as a Priest. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t at least a little nervous, but I think that I just have to keep reminding myself that if God’s brought me this far, He’s going to continue to guide and shepherd me in my Priestly Ministry to the people of God. ”
As a newly ordained priest, Steven Huber will serve as Associate Pastor at Assumption Parish in Windsor, ON.
Huber grew up in Albuquerque, NM and first informally met the Basilian Fathers as he was growing up, hearing about them in his community and from his Father. The more formal connection was made in college. In his final year of University he met Fr. Chris Valka who was completing his Diaconate year. It was Fr. Valka who reached out and asked if he had considered the priesthood, which prompted Huber to consider the possibility.
He obtained his bachelor’s degree from New Mexico State University in Music Education and his Masters of Divinity from St. Mary’s Seminary at the University of St. Thomas. As a scholastic, he was involved in the music ministry at the Chapel of St. Basil, the Archdiocesan Choir, and the youth ministry at St. Anne Catholic Community. He also helped with the music at the youth Mass and gave several presentations to the confirmation classes on various topics, including vocations, the Saints, and how to live out the faith in daily life.
“I felt called to be a teacher when I was in high school and I still felt like I was being called on to something more. With the Basilians it felt like it was a way to unite this passion that I had for teaching with the call that I felt that was coming from god to serve him in the Priesthood”
Huber professed his final vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience to the Congregation on January 20, 2018 at the Chapel of St. Basil in Houston, TX and was ordained to the Diaconate on May 12, 2018 at the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Houston, TX.
Founded in France in 1822, The Congregation of St. Basil, also known as the Basilian Fathers, is a vibrant community of priests, students for the priesthood, and lay associates who profess simple vows. Basilians serve God through their apostolic work in education and evangelization throughout France, Canada, United States, Mexico, and Colombia.
