Congratulations to Limitless Horizons Ixil, which was awarded the 2021 UNESCO Literacy Prize for its remote library programming in response to the Covid pandemic. The award recognizes six outstanding literacy programs from all over the world.
The non-governmental organization has worked to address gender disparities and improve educational outcomes in Chajul, Guatemala since 2004 and offers the first and only public library in Chajul. When the first case of COVID-19 was reported in Guatemala in March 2020, the library was forced to close, leaving students without learning resources and books. In response, Limitless Horizons adapted its library programming to be distributed through radio and television as the majority of people in Chajul lack access to computers and the Internet.
The Basilians have supported this exciting initiative through its Basilian Human Development Fund.
As a recipient of the UNESCO Literacy Prize, Limitless Horizons will receive $20,000 and was featured in UNESCO’s International Literacy Day webinar.
