Fr. George Smith Blesses New Student Center
September 8, 2025

Fr. George Smith, CSB blessed the new center in the Lavery Library, marking a significant milestone in St. John Fisher University’s commitment to academic excellence and student support. The center is designed to honor the legacy of Fr. Charles J. Lavery, CSB, the university’s second president, who served from 1958 to 1980.Under his leadership, the university expanded significantly, increasing enrollment from 475 to over 3,000 students. This transformation is the largest capital project in St. John Fisher University’s history.
The modernized Lavery Library now features tech-rich classrooms, expanded student workspaces, and centralized student services, providing a dynamic environment for learning and collaboration. This revitalized space continues to embody the Basilian values of “Teach me goodness, discipline, and knowledge,” serving as a testament to the enduring impact of Fr. Lavery’s vision and the Basilian Fathers’ dedication to education.
