Basilian Schools Make History: Catholic Central and St. Thomas Raise Over $2 Million for Tuition Assistance

March 12, 2025

Two Basilian schools—Detroit Catholic Central (Novi, MI.) and St. Thomas High School (Houston, TX.)—have made history, each surpassing the $1 million mark in their respective tuition assistance fundraisers. These remarkable achievements underscore the enduring commitment of both institutions to ensuring that a Catholic education remains accessible to students, regardless of financial circumstances. The funds will be used for tuition assistance and financial aid, helping the school make a Basilian education more accessible to both current and future students at both schools.

Catholic Central’s DRIVE 2025: A Record-Breaking Effort

The Shamrock community shattered expectations this year, raising an astonishing $1,048,204 during the annual DRIVE fundraiser. This milestone far exceeded last year’s record of $873,034, setting a new precedent for years to come. Students, alumni, parents, staff, and friends of Catholic Central came together in an extraordinary display of generosity and school spirit, proving once again that DRIVE is more than just a fundraiser—it is a tradition built on unity, determination, and faith.

At the heart of the 2025 DRIVE was the dedication of CC’s senior class, who took the lead in organizing dynamic assemblies, breathtaking decorations, and engaging competitions. Their creativity and leadership brought the school together in a spirited celebration of Catholic education.

The rewards of their hard work extend beyond the financial success. Students earned 16 coveted DRIVE Fridays, a series of development days offering unique opportunities such as college visits, professional workshops, and life skills classes. More than just a break from routine, these days reinforce Catholic Central’s mission to develop well-rounded young men grounded in Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge.

Michael Carrier, Director of Student Activities, reflected on the significance of the achievement:

“The DRIVE is a unique event. It showcases everything that is great about our school and Basilian education. The main thing is the passion, enthusiasm, and pride our students and community have for our school. It also highlights the creativity of our students and the natural competitive spirit they have within. The DRIVE takes total buy-in from everyone.”

Carrier also emphasized that this success not only enhances the current student experience but ensures future generations of Shamrocks will have the same opportunities.

St. Thomas High School’s Round-Up: 99 Years of Giving Back

Over at St. Thomas High School, students, faculty, and alumni marked an equally historic moment as they raised $1,002,640 in tuition assistance through their long-standing Round-Up Raffle. This achievement demonstrates the unwavering dedication of the St. Thomas community to upholding the Basilian tradition of accessible education.

For nearly a century, the Round-Up event has been a pillar of the St. Thomas experience, bringing students together to give back in a meaningful way. The 2025 event saw students go above and beyond, with standout contributions such as Jonathan King’s incredible personal fundraising total of $110,000. His efforts, along with those of his fellow Eagles, reflect a deep commitment to helping future students access a transformative Catholic education.

Fr. Jim Murphy, CSB, President of St. Thomas, shared his pride in the students:

“Once again, the Men of St. Thomas have put the Motto of the Basilian Fathers and our school into practice. With over a third of the student body requiring assistance, this event demonstrates the value they put on this community. While the fundraising does earn the student body days off as a reward, they truly understand the reward of the satisfaction of a job well done. Goodness. Discipline. Knowledge. Yes, these are alive and well.”

A Future Built on Catholic Education

The extraordinary fundraising efforts of both Catholic Central and St. Thomas High School reaffirm their commitment to the Basilian mission of education and evangelization. By raising over $2 million collectively, these schools are not just funding tuition assistance—they are safeguarding the future of Catholic education and ensuring that more families can afford this life-changing opportunity.

With each DRIVE and Round-Up, students and alumni alike deepen their connection to their schools, reinforcing traditions that span generations. As both institutions look toward the future, one thing is clear: the fight to make Catholic education accessible is stronger than ever, and the Basilian spirit continues to thrive in the hands of the next generation.

As Fr. Murphy and Michael Carrier emphasized, these achievements go beyond numbers—they embody the values of faith, hard work, and community that define Basilian education. And as the students of St. Thomas like to say: Round-Up 2026… we’re coming for you!
