Basilian Associates Welcomed into Local Community
May 17, 2023

The process of becoming a Basilian Father begins with the Congregation’s associate program. At this stage, discerners are invited to meet members of the community virtually and in-person. In Medellin, Colombia, the Basilian associates have been invited to get to know the community more closely by living in the local house where they’ll be introduced to community life and experience the Basilian charisms of education and evangelization.
The two Basilian associates were welcomed into the local home on January 28, the feast of St. Thomas Aquinas. Father Carlos Arturo Rodríguez Marciales, CSB, director of associates, and Father Óscar Fernando Gómez Soto CSB, pastor at Parroquia San Basilio, will accompany them in the journey as they discern their vocation. Please pray for these young men as they embark on a journey that involves personal, spiritual, community, academic, pastoral and intercultural development.
On Saturday, February 18, the associates received the ‘las cogullas’ or albs to wear during liturgical services. The albs were presented by Father Rodríguez Marciales during the community’s Eucharist.
The local community, including the associates, gathers everyday to pray the Liturgy of the Hours and the rosary and for community Eucharist. Giving the young men the opportunity to grow in their prayer life will prepare them for the novitiate.
As the parish of San Basilio resumes in person activities, the Basilian associates have the opportunity to experience the pastoral ministry as they are involved in many different parish groups.
In preparation for university studies that take place at later stages in the formation process, the associates complete studies at home by taking courses in Latin, English, liturgy, writing and reading comprehension, and Bible study. They also have the opportunity to attend the Center of Studies of Religious CER of Medellin.
The associates are encouraged to deepen community relationships through communal activities including sharing meals, walks and social outings. Getting to know one another in an informal setting creates a fun atmosphere and allows everyone to experience the community life more fully.
