Fr. Kevin Storey, CSB, joined CBC to share his inspiring encounter with Pope Leo XIV\u2014then just Cardinal Prevost. \u201cWe connected priest to priest,\u201d he said, highlighting the new pope\u2019s humility, warmth, and global vision<\/em><\/p>\nAfter their formal discussion, the two men discovered unexpected common ground: both had served as missionaries in Latin America\u2014Prevost in Peru, Storey in Colombia\u2014and both had led religious congregations. They shared stories about the joys and challenges of leadership, connecting as equals.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe was far more significant than I am, we were just able to connected as a priest to another priest,\u201d Storey noted, emphasizing how approachable and authentic the future pope was. He described him as hands-on, deeply pastoral, responsive, humorous, and humble. \u201cI asked him if he was related to the PO bus company, and he joked, \u2018I only wish our family had that kind of money.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
Storey believes these same qualities\u2014humanity, responsiveness, and global perspective\u2014will now shape the new pope\u2019s leadership. \u201cI think the sense is that even though he was born in Chicago, speaks English, is that his ministry really thrived in Peru and so he brings that universal sense of the Church(…) He was kind of serving the universal Church as opposed to just serving the American Church.\u201d he said, countering concerns about another major world leader hailing from the United States.<\/p>\n
More than his origin, it is the pope\u2019s grounding in Catholic social teaching that gives Storey hope. He described him as deeply connected to Rerum Novarum<\/em>, Pope Leo XIII\u2019s encyclical that laid the foundation of modern Catholic social thought. \u201cHe will continue much of what Pope Francis has done,\u201d Storey said, \u201cbut I hope he can be a unifier\u2014in the Church and in the world.\u201d<\/p>\nWith so many forces today pulling communities apart, Father Storey hopes the new pope\u2019s leadership will center on healing and togetherness. \u201cIf he can bring unity when there\u2019s so much dividing us\u2014sometimes on external factors\u2014that would be my great hope for Pope Leo.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
