Parks Canada Installs Historical Plaque Recognizing the National Historic Significance of Fr. Henry Carr, CSB
May 17, 2018
On Thursday, May 10, Parks Canada installed a historical plaque to commemorate the life and work of Father Henry Carr, CSB. In 2012, Parks Canada designated Father Carr as a person of historical significance and a dedication ceremony for the plaque took place on June 4, 2017. Almost a year later, this plaque has been installed at its permanent home on St. Joseph Street, just outside the entrance to Carr Hall. Father James McConica, CSB who initiated the process of recognizing Father Carr was in attendance for the installation, along with a number of descendants of Father Carr’s sister, Mary Carr Hatch.
Father Carr served in a variety of leadership roles including president of the College from 1915-1925 and superior general of the Congregation from 1930-1942. He is well known for enabling students of St. Michael’s College, a small liberal arts Catholic college, matriculate into the fully federated University of Toronto, a model that has been adopted at universities elsewhere in Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and British Columbia. Along with Etienne Gilson, Father Edmond McCorkell, CSB, and Gerald Phelan, he founded the internationally renowned Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies in Toronto in 1929.
